Year One - Vision

We believe that young children learn best by being active and engaged. We want our children to have the opportunity to practice learning to develop skill and confidence and to use their knowledge to be creative. We allow our children to do this by providing opportunities for them to learn through play.

We enable our children’s development through supporting:

Head-  A thinking child – curious and creative, explore the world and how it works, ideas and discovery, problem solving

Heart-  A feeling child – self belief, embracing diversity, safe and reassured, their role in their class and community, how their feelings their behaviour and others, proud

Hand- A doing child – try things out, take risks, experiment, refine ideas, develop, cause and effect

Year One in Action

Year One learning is planned to be engaging, challenging and providing opportunities for exploration and problem solving. This is done through a blend of adult-directed and child-led learning experiences. Children have many opportunities to learn through play.

The curriculum explores the school’s 6 Big Ideas. These are taught through high-quality texts and themes that link cross-curricular learning each half term.

National Curriculum learning objectives are taught and assessed against, as well as areas of personal development enabling positive behaviours for learning.

Children can learn both inside and outside using the well-planned and interesting play experiences which support academic development as well as language and social development- building on the Characteristics of Effective Learning from Early Years.
