Science

At SJSC we recognise the importance of science in children’s lives and inspire the next generation of scientists.

In SJSC, we expect all children to leave our school with a passion for the world around them; to notice and question everything, and to recognise the science all around them We aim to provide every child with the skills and vocabulary to be able to find answers and draw conclusions.

Science in action

Science learning is fun, practical and engaging to inspire the next generation of scientists.

Science is taught using a progressive and layered curriculum where children develop new knowledge, skills, and vocabulary based on their prior experiences provided by our curriculum. Teachers own their planning by actively matching enquiry types and skills to the lessons and units they teach.

The teaching of vocabulary is important for all of our pupils to be inclusive in our lessons.

Educational visits to locations such as The Horniman Museum, Wildlife Garden, Peckham Rye Park , The Natural History Museum and The Science Museum are viewed as powerful and positive teaching tools and are a regular feature of the curriculum

In class, children experience different types of scientific enquiry which include: observing over time; pattern seeking; identifying, classifying and grouping; comparative and fair testing (controlled investigations); and researching using secondary sources. In order to teach scientific enquiry, teachers teach and develop the children’s scientific skills.
