Home Learning

At SJSC we strongly believe that:

  • The purpose of home learning is to enable children to practise and consolidate the skills and ideas they have learnt at school.

  • Home learning must be age appropriate and take into account the busy day the children have at school.

  • Home learning does not replace the many enriching activities a family can offer and prioritise out of school, such as riding bikes, outings to parks or museums, playing with friends, baking, visits to the library and other brilliant activities.

  • Each half term a curriculum newsletter will be sent home. This will give a brief overview of what learning will be covered and outline the class project. The curriculum newsletter will include some ‘help at home’ suggestions. This is not compulsory but rather suggestions for parents who want ideas of how to get involved with, or talk about, the half-term learning at home. This may be places to visit, issues to talk about, websites to look at, or skills to practice.

  • Daily reading is important and weekly books will be taken home from school. Any reading parents do with their children at home adds value as it not only allows children to practise their reading skills but develops a love of books.

  • In year 6 we will be preparing the children for secondary school with regards to managing their time and working towards homework deadlines. It will be important for you to support your child in planning when to complete tasks and make sure they have enough time to complete them.

  • As part of our homework policy, we purchase an online subscription service with www.mathletics.com for all pupils. Mathletics is an online resource with fun and varied activities that will reinforce your child’s learning. Every child has individual login details that will allow them to access Mathletics from any computer (PC or Mac) that has internet access.

Please email the office or your child’s class teacher (office@sjsc.southwark.sch.uk) if your child has lost their login details.
