Music

At SJSC, we believe that music gives every individual the opportunity to express themselves, build up a positive sense of self and develop confidence.

All pupils will leave SJSC having had exposure to a broad range of music and a stronger idea of what genres they like and why having been encouraged to listen to and appreciate critically the music they have listened to. We want them to learn how to express themselves freely and in the knowledge that their expression does not have to be the same as that of their peers. We want our children to understand and appreciate the links between music and emotions.

Music In Action

Singing is a key part of school life in SJSC with performances in school or in the church or in venues across London to allow the children to find value in their success through the feedback of audiences.

In Key Stage 1 children look at rhythm, and pulse and learn how to read and repeat different rhythmic patterns. They compose and improvise using instruments.

In Key Stage 2, they start to explore notation and will look at composition using laptops.

Children have access to instruments in weekly classes; percussion, glockenspiels, and keyboards and learn the recorder, Samba drums and African Drumming.

Alongside our curriculum, there are opportunities to learn a number of musical instruments. We have brilliant teachers who come in to provide brass, violin, flute, guitar and piano tuition.

We try to find opportunities for performance as much as possible. As well as growing important performance skills and disciplines, children experience first-hand the joy and excitement of sharing with a live audience.

Over the past few years, as well as regular performances in school and church, our children have performed, at many venues including at the O2 Arena, Bold Tendencies, the Tower of London and both the East Dulwich and Peckham festivals.
