Art

At SJSC we want our children to know that they are artists, craft makers, and designers.

Through art, craft, and design we want to engage, inspire and challenge by introducing them to a broad range of techniques, materials, and artists, craftspeople, and designers.

We want to equip all with the knowledge and skills to experiment, explore, take risks, invent and create. To be authentic and explore their own identity as well as being curious about respecting and collaborating with others.

Above all else, we want children to foster a positive, life-long relationship with art and have fun.

Art in action

Our curriculum is focussed on the knowledge and skills within our progression plan. We develop creative connections to other areas of the curriculum in engaging and enriching ways. Our schemes of work are adaptable in their content and outcome, to enable creativity.

We collect visual evidence to show what art, craft and design look like within our school and use sketchbooks and Yearbooks to follow the learning journey of each pupil to show how they have developed creatively throughout their time at SJSC. This is an ongoing journey and is continually changing.

We increase pupils’ first-hand experiences of art, craft, and design through school visits to art galleries and other enrichment activities.

The children participate in an annual whole school Arts Festival, where their work is displayed in a gallery setting and our community is invited to share the creativity we celebrate at SJSC. We regularly engage with local, national, and international competitions, and through our partnerships, with local schools, artists, and art institutions our children can place themselves and their creativity in a real-life context and professional gallery settings.

  • To increase pupils’ first-hand experiences of art, craft and design through school visits to art galleries and other enrichment activities.

  • To draw in the parental and wider community through school-based and collaborative events between schools via displays, exhibitions and workshops.

  • To building meaningful relationships with local galleries and wherever possible, maximise opportunities to exhibit our work in professional gallery spaces.

  • Art plays an important part in a child’s early development. The Early Learning Goals encompass all areas of creative development. Art and design are taught by a dedicated art teacher in key stage 1 and 2. A variety of teaching and learning styles are used in lessons.

Our principal aim is to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in art and design. We ensure that the act of investigating and making something includes exploring and developing ideas, and evaluating and developing work. Children also have the opportunity to use a wide range of materials and resources, including ICT.
