English

At SJSC, we believe that books can open minds to new ideas, exciting adventures, and endless possibilities.

Through our book-based learning approach, children are inspired to identify as writers. We motivate children to not only develop a writer’s voice but to engage in debate and discussion.

Captivating hooks create excitement and a purpose for writing. Through purposeful opportunities and reasons to write, children develop authentic personal voice, style, stamina and range as a writer. They enjoy writing expressively, imaginatively and informatively for purpose.

Children become novelists, reporters, editors, bloggers, and more.

English in action

Through using carefully chosen high-quality texts, children are exposed to and gain knowledge of a range of story structures, genres and writing styles. As children move through the school, the texts chosen provide a progressively greater challenge, including length and subject matter and classic and modern literature.

Using a diverse range of books as catalysts, children learn how to write for a wide range of audiences and purposes, fictional and non-fictional. As children progress, they deepen and consolidate learning, acquiring the specific knowledge and skills needed to express, shape and craft ideas meaningfully, and with confidence.

Speaking and listening activities are used to support children to practice these essential skills for effective writing. Before the writing process, there is a strong focus on oral composition to articulate ideas and structure them, while during the writing process, feedback and conferencing are used to ensure children continue to deepen and consolidate understanding.
