Spring term Issue 23: 8th March 2024

Dear Parents,

Today the school was buzzing with World Book Day costumes. We had a wonderful celebration assembly with a book character parade - well done to everyone for such brilliant costumes and entries into the competitions. A big thank you to Miss Cosby for organising everything.

On Thursday all of the children enjoyed workshops for British Science Week inspiring our future scientists . On Friday our African Drumming rehearsals began and our year five girls’ football team took part in a local tournament. Life at SJSC is full of excitement, and the children always make us proud.

Well done to the group of year 4 children who organised a fantastic pop up stall in the playground this afternoon, raising money for WWF Adopt a Turtle. SJSC values in action!

Have a great weekend everyone.

Best wishes,

Alli and Joe

Reception

Pop Splash Yum!  What an exciting Science Day on Thursday, Reception were making bubbles in every which way with our fun bubble challenges!  We made bubbles big and small and tried out different bubble recipes.    On Wednesday we found out about healthy eating and all made Rainbow Fruit Kebabs, we were really proud of the children who tried new flavours and textures.

The children and the grown ups all looked amazing in their World Book Day costumes… well done everyone for a tremendous effort!  In the afternoon, the children all had the chance to become authors; we were enchanted by the delightful mini books the children wrote and illustrated.

Home learning: Now we don’t have any more new sounds to learn, to support your regular phonics practise at home, each week we will send home  word lists for you to build with your yellow phoneme cards from your phonics packs. This week’s words feature the  digraph ‘ai’  as in tail and trigraph ‘igh’ as in light.   Don’t forget tricky words!!

Year 1

They say ‘teamwork makes the dream work’ and this week the children proved it with their collaborative Noah’s Ark creations. Our value this term is kindness and one of the ways the team could win for best creation was based on how well they were working as a team including how inclusive they were being of each other’s ideas. In the end, it was so hard to choose just one team, so we had two groups of winners!

Year 2

In Science this week, children started their unit on Materials. To start, children thought of what they knew about materials. We then collated all of our knowledge and shared it. Afterwards, we spoke about what we would like to find out about over the course of the term and asked fantastic questions. Finally, children explored different materials, discussed how they felt and then identified some of their properties. We then grouped each material based upon their properties. Awesome explorative work, scientists!

Year 3

Water Week!

This week is all about water! Well you can’t make tea without it so we thought we would give the concept more thought and celebrate water.

Firstly, we have been busy writing acrostic poems and creating rhyming couplets to compose a class water poem. To share on our Tea and Story day. Secondly,  we had a special visitor called Bob  in from WaterAid to talk to us about the work they do .  The children listened carefully, asked thoughtful questions and shared their thoughts so considerately. We were very proud of them.

We look forward to seeing you all for our Tea and Story fundraiser afternoon on Thursday 21st March.

Year 4

We arrived in the morning to discover parts of a robot scattered around the classroom. We used our investigative skills and talked to eye-witnesses to ty to piece together what had taken place. We then looked at the features of a news report and used this information to plan a segment for a local news channel before going live with our broadcast.

Year 5

This week in year 5, we were fortunate to have a science workshop.  We looked at how time moves differently depending on gravity. We learnt that the more gravity there is the slower time will tick. We carried out various experiments where we changed one variable at a time and discussed the outcomes.

Year 6

It’s been all go in year 6!

We became Shakespearean actors, performing the opening scene of Romeo and Juliet to help with our writing. In science we had a lot of fun learning about forces as part of our workshop. We destroyed paper cup towers with air blasters, created mini explosions with fizzy tablets and made a mess with water balloons. And today we enjoyed a fantastic World Book Day.

Music this week…

As it is World Book Day this week, we have been making links with lots of books;

Year 3 performed a World Book Day version of George Ezra’s Shotgun. Please watch the video. Below is a link to the full version of this song.

Year 4 continued to learn about the work of a Foley Artist and next week we will look at the opening chapter to The Iron Man and think about creating sound effects to set the scene.

News from the Art Studio…

This week in the Art studio, Years 2,3 & 4 have created Zines that celebrate themselves or the things they are passionate about. Zines are self-published magazines made from 1 or 2 pieces of paper. We can’t wait to share the finished results with you.

To celebrate British Science week, years 1 to 6 took part in ‘Time’ related science hosted by ‘Science Professors.’ The Science Professors team provided the children with an exciting visit that inspired a love for science through the use of an interactive workshop.

The wonderful reception teachers organised their own ‘science’ area where the children were able to explore bubbles using scientific thinking.

Red Nose Day – Friday March 15th

On Friday 15th March, we will be celebrating Red Nose Day at SJSC. The focus of the day is to do ‘something funny for money’ whilst raising money for charity. It would be great if your child could come to school with a joke or a riddle that they would like to share with their class on the day.

What do I need to do?

  • Wear red on Red Nose Day – March 15th!

  • Come to school with a funny joke to tell your class

  • Bring a red nose to school, if you wish

  • Donate £1 on Parent Mail if your child is coming in non-uniform

Have a great weekend. See you next week!
