Summer term Issue 10: 30th June 2023

Dear Families

Today we welcomed our new reception children to enjoy a playdate in school. We have talked to our new families about what a wonderful community we have here at SJSC and know that you will all be as welcoming as ever to new families- thank you!

Unbelievably there are only 3 weeks left of this term. Please make sure you take a look at the diary as there are lots of end-of-year events taking place including a samba concert from year 5,  trips, sports days, and year 6 performance and leavers’ service. Please remember that we are closed for the two teacher strike days next week – there is no school on Wednesday and Friday.

Children will be meeting their new teachers during the week beginning 10th July and parents will be informed on the same day about which class the children will be in next year. We will provide more information about this event next week.

Finally, we would like to thank the Friends of SJSC team once again for the brilliant school fair and for all those families who came to enjoy the day- it looks like we made a brilliant profit. The Friends of SJSC will be providing more information about this and how it will be spent.

Best wishes,

Alli Crank Joseph Bell

Upcoming Diary Dates

Reception

We have had a wonderful week in Reception… We began by imagining what Super Heroes we would be… and thinking about what REAL super powers are… Super Smarts… Problem solving…Kindness, patience,   friendship. We are all Super…It’s Official!

Then on Tuesday and Wednesday each class went on a Forest School adventure in the Nature Garden in Peckham Rye Park. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who helped it run so smoothly. The children loved the experience of being out in the woods and they really enjoyed all the activities they got to try.  We were really proud of their creativity and persistence in trying new things.

Superhero Day… coming very soon (During week beginning 10.07)  Date TBC But start making your costumes! There will be a Superhero workshop as part of the Special Day, with great fun activities.

Year 1

This week in Year 1, we were learning about measure in our Maths lessons. The children started by using non-standard units of measurement and finding out how many cubes long different classroom items were. They measured and compared scissors, books, water bottles and glue. They were then introduced to the unit of centimetres as ‘cm’. They each measured their feet and together we collated this information into a table to find the most common length of the class. They also used rulers to measure their hands and other items and record these measurements.

Year 2

This week has been full steam ahead in our preparations for our Great Fire of London exhibition on Tuesday! Year 2 should be really proud of themselves of all the work they have created over the last few weeks and we cannot wait to show it all off to our adults and other students in the school. One of the things we have been preparing is a song about the events of the Great Fire and we decided to sing it for the whole of KS1 in assembly this morning. Year 2 was FABULOUS and everyone really enjoyed it – we cannot wait to show our adults and for anyone who can’t make it we will be sure to take lots of videos and photos!

Year 3

In year 3 this week, we wrote and published wonderful descriptions of the eruption of Vesuvius.

Kanye wrote: ‘Ash fell from the gates of heaven, while people were screaming and shouting as the ash chased them twice as fast.’

Once we published our writing we illustrated a cover which could be cracked like a volcano to reveal the writing beneath.

Year 4

This week, year 4 have finished reading The Matchbox Diary and even created their very own matchbox diaries. The children were asked to bring in a trinket that was special to them and share it with the class. Here are a few examples of what we saw!

Year 5

On Monday, Lichtenstein class had lots of fun competing in an inter-school athletics competition in Southwark Park.

Year 6

This week in Year 6, we have continued to explore the human circulatory system. Students created a re-enactment of the journey that blood takes through the body. Starting as deoxygenated blood in the heart, they were then sent to the lungs to gather oxygen, back to the heart, then through the rest of the body from the brain down to the feet

Music this week…

This week in music began with a group of Year 2 boys sharing their beat boxing skills which they had been practising during lunchtime. Inspired by this performance, other children in the school practised putting different sounds to four beats of a bar having watched a demonstration by Napoleon Maddox.

In addition to this, there was some music technology in play with a group of Year 6 children using the tablets to add percussive sounds over a piece of music as well as the Year 2s preparing an exciting project in time for their exhibition next week.

Year 1s were having musical conversations using instruments. This involved taking turns and listening to what had been played.

Year 4s were writing Food Raps, taking the rhythm from Pease Pudding Hot and substituting their own words. Year 3s are getting skilled at their call and response chants. Below is a clip of some Year 3s practising their song about Boudicca.  )

Well done to Rafiq in Year 4 for performing one of his Grade 4 pieces during assembly and to Martha, Isla and Zinzile for a superb rendition of Naughty from Matilda

News from the Art Studio…

This week in the Art Studio, Year 1 were making marks to music!

We started our art session with a boogie! It was so much fun we’ve decided to start all of our sessions with a dance to get our creativity flowing!

Stars of the week

Stars are celebrated because they have demonstrated the school values, or gone above and beyond.
Well done to all our stars this week …

Have a wonderful weekend!
