Summer term Issue 6: 26th May 2023

Dear Families

This week the sun has come out and we’ve put our dancing shoes on - a big thank you to the Friends of SJSC for organising such a fabulous disco - such great dancing.

On Wednesday Year 5 enjoyed the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall; last Friday children served canapes at the Royal Automobile Association; on Thursday Year 2 went on a minibeast hunt and throughout the week the array of sporting activities continued across the school - wonderful experiences!

Next week is half term, have a brilliant week and we will see you on Monday 5th June.

Best wishes,

Alli Crank Joseph Bell

Upcoming Diary Dates

Reception

This week we have sailed far away to the land of the Wild Things…! We shared the story of ‘Where the Wild Things are’ by Maurice Sendak. We have been learning how to write invitations, inviting people and wild things to our wild rumpus! We made our own instruments and poems and had a ‘wild’ time exploring rhythm and rhyme. In maths, we were learning how to prove which numbers can be shared and found out that only even numbers can be shared equally into two parts. We spotted the pattern odd, even, odd, even and tested whether that goes on into bigger numbers. We’ve had a fantastic half term and feel proud of how the children’s reading has come on! Now… let’s just nail the tricky words!

Year 1

This week, Year 1 have become non-fiction writers. They have been learning about the different features of non-fiction writing such as headings, contents page and captions. They have worked together to carry out research on the moon before writing their own amazing non-fiction books about the moon.

Year 2

In Year 2, children have been looking at the different ways in which animals and plants are adapted to their habitats. In doing so, we had a wonderful explore of Goose Green park to observe some minibeats and to explore the plant life in the park.  Children discussed how these plants depend on each other and what factors both support and hinder their survival. Well done for great observations and questioning in order to expand and deepen understanding.

Year 3

In year 3 this week we have been writing Newspaper articles reporting the amazing discovery of a boy-kings’ tomb in Egypt. Our writing was focused on the timing of the discovery and we used wonderful adverbial phrases to show the sequence of events. After writing, we talked about our Big idea of Social Justice and how 100 years later, our ideas about who owns treasure have changed and we looked at news articles about the returning of treasures to nations all over the world.

Year 4

In Year 4 this week, we worked together in teams to pool our knowledge about circuits from our science lessons to create life-size buzzer games. First, we used buzzers and then we tried out light bulbs and motors too. Some of us competed to see who could complete the game the quickest and with the least buzzes!

Year 5

In Year 5, we really enjoyed our trip to the Royal Festival Hall to listen to Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird’. We joined in with many other schools to perform a song accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra!

Year 6

Today, we had a visit from TfL to talk to us about travelling independently and safely. As we become young adults and we spend more time out of the house and away from our families, it is important that we know how to travel safely. We are looking forward to going to school by ourselves and managing this safely and independently.

Music this week…

This past half term, Years 2 and 4 have been looking at The Magic Flute by Mozart. Please follow the link about an exciting opportunity with The Royal Opera House. Even if your child is not in these year groups, it may still be of interest if they have a passion for singing.

Year 4 - Adopt a School

This week some children from Year 4 had the opportunity to attend a fundraising dinner at the Royal Automobile Club on Pall Mall. They used their newfound skills of silver service to serve the guests and to speak about the work with Chef Alice and Adopt a School. Thank you to Miss Cosby for organising this and for Miss Laidlaw for lending her culinary hand to the late evening trip.
