Spring term Issue 22: 1st March 2024

Dear families

The rain has stopped! Despite the wettest February on record, here at SJSC we have had a great week. All children attended first aid workshops and now have the knowledge of how to look after people if they need care. We enjoyed a pop-up choir in the playground on Tuesday, to mark LGBT+ History month and our message of respecting our differences. Our Year 6 netball team made us proud by representing the school wonderfully in their match against Peckham Allstars – well done everyone!

Today we hosted a Parent Prayer Group. Thank you to all those that came. All are welcome to the next group which will take place on 17th May at 9:15 at school.

Coming up next week we have British Science Week workshops taking place, and on Friday we will be celebrating World Book Day. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in their wonderful costumes. The photo and writing competition deadlines have been extended to Monday to allow one more weekend to enter.

Have a lovely weekend

Upcoming Diary Dates

Reception

We’ve had a great time finding out about seeds and then planting them this week in Reception! Children were carefully filling their pots and making labels, so they knew what they had planted. Stik class have done beautiful drawings of flowers and Himid class have made gorgeous seed packets, with instructions about how to plant seeds.

We walked all the way up to the top hall (counting the stairs as we went!) to do our First Aid Training, and we now know how to put each other into the recovery position. Next Friday is World Book Day, don’t forget to come dressed as a character from your favourite book!

Year 1

This week Year 1 have enjoyed becoming scientists! We have been learning all about plants and discussing different kinds of seeds. We then planted some seeds that we are hoping are going to grow into bean plants. We made careful observations about the beans and what they looked like, and we have been checking them each day to see if any change has occurred. Some of us have been updating our bean diaries. We have made some predictions and have our fingers crossed that we might see some shoots on Monday!

Year 2

This week, year two have started their football unit in PE. We are having specific coaching with a qualified football coach over the course of the term and have explored ball control techniques with enthusiasm and joy. Children also explored control of the football, passing through cones, dribbling into space, and avoiding obstacles. Lots of fun was had, well done everyone!

Year 3

Year 3 have started their new science unit, which is all about plants. In the first lesson, we did scientific drawings of a flower and labelled the parts. We then did some reading about the function of the different parts. It was amazing to see some of the flowers open up right before our very eyes!

Year 4

Year 4 have been busy this week…to name a few: we have been writing an innovated story of our English book The Mermaid of Zennor, learning football skills in PE, using the distributive law in maths to find the products of timetables beyond 12, and we attended a First Aid workshop. In our First Aid workshop, a certified nurse showed us CPR techniques. Our favourite bit was learning about and touching the emergency blanket (foil blanket). An emergency blanket is a lightweight mylar and aluminium covering used by first aid responders to keep the wearer warm in specific situations.

Year 5

This week in Year 5, we started reading our English text ‘Hidden Figures’.

We have learnt all about the lives of both Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson.  On Thursday, we started writing a formal persuasive letter to allow Mary Jackson to attend Hampton High School so she could undertake specialist math lessons to become an engineer. We learnt how to use the subjunctive to express things that could or should happen.

Year 6

To finish our learning on The Suffragettes in writing, Year 6 had fun making their own suffragette badges inspired by the badges used from different suffrage groups. We learnt how badges were an affordable tool to show that you were a supporter of votes for women.

Music this week…

Children in Reception are looking at the music from The Carnival of the Animals by the French composer Saint- Saens. This week we were listening to the piano which is played to represent the lion.

Year 1 watched a musical version of the story, Elephants In The Custard led by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. They were then creating a Waltz rhythm (Um Pa Pa) using low pitched and high pitched percussion instruments.

Year 2 had a trip to the world of Opera this week as they had an extended lesson exploring Mozart’s The Magic Flute. With access to resources from The Royal Opera House, we met the main characters, played some drama games and started to learn a version of Papagano’s Aria.

Year 3 continued their journey into salsa music. This week they were playing major and minor chords on tuned percussion to accompany the song they are learning whilst also refining their dance moves.

Year 4 learnt about the life of a Foley Artist (the person who is responsible for sound effects in television, film or radio productions).

Year 5 were learning about the Estonian composer, Arvo Part who wrote a piece of music, Spiegel im Spiegel by looking at mirrored patterns on a number line. Each number on the number line was translated into one of 7 notes from an octave scale. It was a fantastic example of the relationship between maths and music. The children were then tasked with composing a simple melody based on their own mirrored patterns.

Year 6 focused on rhythmic games. We were playing concentration and had to practise saying our own names followed by the name of another child whilst keeping a steady body percussion in time. The children then had to listen to a backing track and practise performing their name in any way which was in time with the track. Banksy started to look at the concept of internal rhymes in lyrics including those of Hey Jude and the 1980’s rap, My Melody.

Sports Update

Netball

Despite the wet and grey evening, our Year 6 netballers delivered an amazing performance in their match against Peckham Allstars. Their game showed remarkable improvement, leaving Miss Evans and Mrs Laidlaw full of pride! A special congratulations to Apphia and Alayna for their performances, earning them the well-deserved titles of players of the match. Well done everyone (including our parent and sibling supporters) for your enthusiasm and willingness and we are looking forward to our next match!

Stars of the Week

Stars are celebrated because they have demonstrated the school values, or gone above and beyond.
Well done to all our stars this week …

World Book Day Competitions

Red Nose Day – Friday March 15th

  • Wear red on Red Nose Day – March 15th!

  • Come to school with a funny joke to tell your class

  • Bring a red nose to school, if you wish

  • Donate £1 on Parent Mail if your child is coming in non-uniform

On Friday 15th March, we will be celebrating Red Nose Day at SJSC. The aim of the day is to do ‘something funny for money’. It would be great if your child could come to school with a joke or a riddle that they would like to share with their class on the day.

Your child can come to school wearing red to raise money for Comic Relief. They can also wear a red nose if they wish.

Have a great weekend. See you next week!
