Summer term Issue 5: 19th May 2023

Dear Families

It has been another fantastic week here at SJSC- cycle training, samba drumming, Chef Alice teaching year 4 how to make bread, and much more.

This week we finished the planting and sowing for our Kitchen Garden. It has really benefited from the extremes of rain and sunshine lately and is beginning to show signs of growth. We’ll be tending to the garden over the rest of the summer term, hoping to enjoy the harvesting of tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, sweetcorn, chard, lettuce, kale, and potatoes, to name just a few of the fruit and veg we have planted! It has been wonderful to see the children getting their hands in the soil and working collaboratively to develop this area and start further planting in the Peace Garden.

This week we have also been celebrating our School Games Award where we have achieved Gold status due to our commitment to school sport. Well done everyone!

Next Wednesday we will be putting on our dancing shoes to join in the fun at the Friends of SJSC disco – if you haven’t bought your ticket yet there is still time.

Please remember that next Friday is INSET day for staff, meaning that the last day of this half term for children is Thursday 25th May.

 Enjoy the weekend

Upcoming Diary Dates

Reception

This week we has been Bee Week in Reception. We have been finding out all about the importance of bees. We found out about their life cycle, how they produce honey and how they also help pollinate plants that provide us with fruit and vegetables. We got to taste different kinds of honey and made a chart to record which was our favourite type. We became Bee B C news reporters, please take a look on Tapestry in the next week to see the entertaining results! In maths, we have been exploring number tracks and the composition of 10, learning how to hop/jump every time you count a number.

Year 1

In Year 1, our marvellous ‘Materials’ topic in Science has seen us exploring transparency! The children were tasked with designing some curtains for astronauts in space. They used torches and sunlight to test if a material was transparent or opaque and were able to choose an opaque material to stick in the window of their rockets. After this, they had an opportunity to test, and classify other objects and materials for their transparency in continuous provision.

Year 2

This week children have been supporting one another in class during their guided reading sessions. Having finished our reading of ‘There’s a Rang-Tan in my bedroom’ we discussed the key messaged the book holds and created posters to encourage others to support the fair development of Palm Oil. We have also all been encouraging within the library, exploring a range of books. Wonderful discussions about different text types, authors and favourite books. On Friday, some children chose to read to the rest of the class which resulted in a relaxed, enjoyable session for all. A great community read, well done!

Year 3

Year 3 have been continuing their learning about the ancient Egyptians. We thought about what made the Egyptians so successful, especially as they lived in a desert!

In groups, the children researched how the ancient Egyptians lived and created models of ancient Egypt to show what they had learnt. We discovered that the River Nile had a lot to do with their success and we’ll be learning more about the Nile in our Geography lessons.

Year 4

This week, Year 4 have been busy innovating Oscar Wilde’s tale ‘The Selfish Giant’ alongside mastering division with remainders. On top of this, we also took part in our final session with Chef Alice who taught us how to make the perfect dough ready to go in the oven. Here are some of the results…!

Year 5

In Year 5 we have been using role play to help us imagine what Odysseus and Circe would say and do in this part of the story.

Year 6

In year 6 this week, we are excited to return to our text Hugo Cabret. This week we have become card masters and we have learnt how to play Solitaire – otherwise known as Patience or Klondike. We enjoyed learning the game and teaching each other. We enjoyed working out top tips and strategies to improve our chances of winning.

Music this week…

In music lessons this week, children were absolutely transfixed when they listened to The Queen of The Night’s aria from the Magic Flute. They couldn’t quite believe that the human voice could sing that high.

Year 4 had a wonderful impromptu piano recital performed. Such fantastic talent.

Year 3 were putting new words to The Bangles’ Walk Like an Egyptian to help them learn about the Egyptians.

Pop Choir have been rehearsing and getting their repertoire ready for the Summer Fair.

News from the Art Studio…

This week the art studio would like to share the fantastic textile art created by Year 3.

The children began by painting different forms of moving water to help understand mood and texture. They painted their seacscapes onto canvas, and used running stitch to make marks and add texture. In the final lesson, they explored different stitches to add detail.
