Autumn term Issue 1: 8th September 2023

Dear families

We are really pleased to start the new academic year and have had a wonderful first week. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all new families and to our reception starters - welcome to our community. We have a great term ahead with lots of exciting learning and fun planned.

Please take note of the 'Meet the Teacher' events for years 1-6 that will be taking place over the next two weeks. This is an opportunity for you to meet your child's new class teacher and find out information about the year. For those who cannot make it, the information will be shared after the event.

We are very excited to be hosting our International Evening event on Friday 29th September, 3:30-5:00pm. All families are welcome- come along, bring a dish to add to the community feast, and enjoy the entertainment and time together as a community. Look out for further information on this event next week.

In the meantime, have a great weekend.

Upcoming Diary Dates

Reception

Welcome to SJSC to our wonderful new reception children and their families. Mrs Davies, Miss Regaard Miss Atkins and Holly (Miss Smith ) have been so impressed by how well the children have started their primary school journey!  Of course we are all exhausted, but they managed their part days and finally their first whole day brilliantly. They managed lunchtime so well, and have started understanding the expectations and routines of Reception life that help us to be one big happy learning family. We are so proud of all the children.

Year 1

This week, year 1 have been busy exploring their new classroom and outdoor environments. Together, they have constructed bridges and mazes, created artwork inspired by their class artists and made tasty meals in the mud kitchen! Now, we’re looking forward to starting our English texts next week.

Year 2

We are so excited to have welcomed all of our wonderful Year 2’s and are very excited for the upcoming year! Our week began with an intruder in our classroom who made a right mess and stole some of our fruit! Using questions, we gathered more information about this green, hungry monster and began creating our ‘Wanted Posters!’. We used amazing punctuation and exciting adjectives to create interesting poster full of information. Mr Evans and Mrs Laidlaw-Shaw are so proud of you all and we cannot wait for all the adventures we have ahead!

Year 3

This week, year three have started reading a wonderful book called the  Tear Thief.  We have been identifying nouns and creating noun phrases, identifying verbs in the past tense and using and identifying adverbials for time, place and manner. We have been very pleased with the level of engagement from our new year 3 children this week. Keep up the hard work!

Year 4

In Year 4 were really lucky to go on a trip to Peckham Levels to watch a performance by Jeneba Kanneh-Mason. We then had the opportunity to meet her and ask questions about her life, career and how she feels about music. Thank you Mrs McGregor for organising such an inspiring trip for our first week back!

Year 6

In year 6, we have been exploring mathematical structures using Cuisenaire rods. We challenged ourselves to write expressions to match the structures we made and, on some occasions, we were able to use more than one expression. We can now tell the difference between additive, multiplicative and combined mathematical structures and use this problem to solve more complex mathematical questions.

Values Certificates

Stars are celebrated because they have demonstrated the school values, or gone above and beyond.
Well done to all our stars this week …

Have a wonderful weekend - see you next week!
