Summer term Issue 13: 21st July 2023

Dear families

It has been a great final week of this academic year – thank you to the whole community for your support, thank you to the SJSC staff team who make our school a great place to learn, and thank you to the children who make us proud every single day. It is an absolute privilege to lead this school.

We held a very emotional Year 6 Leaver’s service this morning. The singing was beautiful and a great send-off to our brilliant children who leave SJSC as compassionate, determined and inspiring young people – the world is yours, go and get it, and let your light shine!

You will have received an email about our Ofsted report that has been released today. Please make sure you have a read-through, we are really proud of our school.

We hope that you all have a wonderful summer and look forward to welcoming you on September 5th.

Upcoming Diary Dates

Reception

Our final week started of with a brilliant Superhero day with a fun workshop from Lucy (of Super Hero Club.) We all had a Super briefing with a super important message about the importance of friendship, family and teamwork, and the different teams we are in that help us succeed.

Then there was Sports day on Wednesday…. What a lovely morning, with all the parents lining the route to and from Goose Green cheering everyone on… It really meant so much to us all… that’s what it is all about! Everyone had a super time!

Finally Miss Bown and Miss Davies and the Reception Team would like to say how proud we are of you all children… as we packed up all this year’s work into your folders to take home, it has reminded us how far you have come on your learning journey. It bought back so many wonderful memories of the great stories we have shared.

Thank you for all our thoughtful cards, gifts and messages. Have a wonderful summer,

The Reception Team.

Year 1

This week, Year 1 were finishing off our Literacy tree text Yeti and the Bird and we learnt that Bird who is from Nigeria, had to start her migration back home before cold weather set it. We planned an itinerary for Bird thinking about the things she might do on each day (using verbs). We then wrote about the things she should pack and why (using conjunctions) so to have a good trip back to Nigeria. We enjoyed a ‘Fantastic Fred’ workshop that taught us how important it is to keep our minds and bodies healthy. The children LOVED the energy and humour of the performer. We also saw out the year with a class party and movie… Thank you so much for all the amazing support you have given our class communities (and the wider school) over our time in Year 1 and we wish you a restful but exciting summer.

Year 2

We loved learning about how to keep our mental health in the best state we can! Using the acronym FRED we now know the four things we can do to be on the best form we can be.

F for food – we should eat healthily to fuel our bodies and brains.

R for rest – we should get plenty of sleep every night.

E for exercise – we should exercise every day, we found out that this can include anything from walking, dancing, swimming to name a few!

D for limited devices – we need to try to limit our time on devices to make sure we can sleep better.

Thanks so much to the amazing FRED and professor who taught us so much – we even had a chance to have a little boogie!

Year 3

On Monday, all of year 3 celebrated Roman Day. We extended our learning on Roman numerals, the geography of the countries the Romans conquered and the food the Romans ate by researching and  designing a food plate for a wealthy Roman.

We also sang songs about how the Romans lived and Roman numerals.

Finally, and very importantly, we were then able to dine like  wealthy Romans with all of the delicious snacks that were donated.

The children and adults made a huge effort to take part in Roman day so a very well done to everyone!

Year 4

Our year 4 scientists went on an expedition to the Horniman Museum this week to discover more about the teeth of different animals. The workshop leader was so impressed with their knowledge and there was great curiosity to learn even more. During the workshop we sorted animals into categories of carnivore, omnivore and herbivore by exploring the types of teeth they have.

Year 5

Year 5 really enjoyed watching the performance of ‘Fantastic Fred’ on Thursday, learning all about having a healthy lifestyle.

Year 6

Year 6 is certainly an adventure. This week in year 6 we celebrated the end of this year’s adventure with a trip to Shrek’s adventure. We travelled with Donkey to Far Far Away and collected the ingredients that we needed (The Hair of a Hero, The Spirit of a Child and The Essence of Ogre) to create a portal to escape back to London. We want to wish our Year 6’s the best as they move on to secondary school!

Sports News

Off the back of Sports Day, each class selected 3 children who over the day, as well as the course of the year have shown excellent sportsmanship. This week, we celebrated these children during a special assembly and each child was awarded a medal to recognise their excellent efforts. Well done everyone!

A huge well done to our netball team in their game against Belham on Monday. We didn't win but their skills have improved so much. We are very proud of your achievements over this last half term and only wish we had more time to continue. Good luck in your new schools and please do carry on with your sports!

Music this week…

On Tuesday, the Year 6s put on a fantastic performance to celebrate everything they have learnt with Pauline and Sandra during their African Drumming session. It was a wonderful afternoon and to see the children work with such focus and skill was truly impressive.

News from the Art Studio…

This week in the Art Studio, Year 4 were completing their Festival Feast. They have worked individually and collaboratively to make a picnic of their favourite foods, using mod roc and acrylic paint.

Stars of the week

Stars are celebrated because they have demonstrated the school values, or gone above and beyond.
Well done to all our stars this week …
