Summer term Issue 12: 14th July 2023

Dear Parents,

First of all we begin with a huge thank you to all of the parents, children and staff for such a wonderful, if not slightly damp, Sports Day today. Truly one of the events of the year - a real celebration of sport and of the community here at SJSC. Next week its Reception’s turn on Wednesday on Goose Green. Thank you to Mr Evans for organising this tremendous event and congratulations are in order as he is now Sports Leader of the Year - congratulations Mr Evans!

Next week is the last week of term, so please make sure any scooters, bikes, clothing are taken home as we will donate any remaining items to charity over the summer. There are also no clubs next week but lots of end of term events - check out the dates in the calendar.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Upcoming Diary Dates

Reception

In reception this week, we have carried on our superhero theme! The children have made comic books, making up their own super story lines. Although we have had some rain, the children have loved being in the mud kitchen and making poison mud pies to go in the Superhero HQ to catch the baddies! We have enjoyed listening to the children read this week, during their phonics assessments and seeing the amazing progress they have ALL made since starting in September. Don’t forget: SUPERHERO DAY on Monday 17th July! Come dressed to impress (homemade costumes welcome).

Year 1

To help us learn more about Nigeria, Year 1 become geographers! They looked at videos and used a range of pictures and written information to find out what life is like in Nigeria. They then shared their research with each other and made amazing posters.

In Science, they have been sorting animals based on what they eat. They children learnt about herbivores, omnivores and carnivores and what each of these groups means. The children worked in groups and sorted animal cards using information about their diets.

Year 2

Year 2 had an exciting trip to Botany Bay on Wednesday! We enjoyed a fantastic time on the beach, paddling, spotting local wildlife and building sandcastles. We encountered some rather pesky seagulls who were determined to snatch our lunches. To top it off – we experienced a rain shower to top all rain showers! What a day was had and it was a true British adventure.

Year 3

In year 3, this week we went to a ‘Windrush workshop’ where we thought about the experiences of the first immigrants to arrive in Britain to help rebuild the country after the devastating war. We freeze framed various parts of the journey over to England. We started with imagining how hard it was to leave the sunny West Indies and all your friends and family, then we showed the way we passed the endless days on the ship; waiting to arrive, being seasick, playing cards and snoozing.

Year 4

Before heading to the Horniman Museum for their practical teeth workshop next week, year 4 have been investigating which liquids cause the most tooth decay! Will it be orange juice, coke, water or milk? Don’t fear, no actual teeth have been used… instead we’re using the shell of an egg because they are similar to the enamel on our teeth.

Year 5

To help understand multiplication of unit fractions, we used Cuisenaire rods to show the whole and the equal parts. We then used the example below to construct our own fractions linking e.g. 1/3 of something with multiplication.

We all had so much fun at sports day on Friday!

Year 6

This week in Year 6 we have been hard at work perfecting our leaver’s play. We are incredibly proud of the work that we have written and produced ourselves and can’t wait to share it with our loved ones next Monday and Tuesday!

Deaf Identity Event

This week we had the pleasure of leading and hosting a Deaf Identity Event in Peckham Rye Park. We were joined by deaf children from resource bases at Jubilee Primary in Brixton and Meridian Primary in Greenwich.

The weather was lovely, the children enjoyed warm up games, especially playing with the parachute!

We also had opportunitiy to express our thoughts and ideas about ourselves, our preferences and explore strategies to help us at home and at school.

Music this week…

This week in Music, some Year 1 children were able to use the brand-new Glockenspiels kindly bought for us by the wonderful PTFA. They were very quick at learning how to locate their first note and follow a simple rhythm as we accompanied a backing track.

Over the last 2 weeks, other year groups have continued to practise their music technology skills as beats and rhythms were created on the Notebooks and some Year 6s were looking at a complex piece of Software called YuStudio, a beginner-friendly online music studio.

Stars of the week

Stars are celebrated because they have demonstrated the school values, or gone above and beyond.
Well done to all our stars this week …

Have a wonderful weekend - see you next week!
