Autumn Term Issue 4: 27th September 2024

Dear families

Thank you for joining us at our International Evening. The weather wasn’t with us, but the community spirit of our school was. Thanks for the generous and delicious array of dishes - we are a school that likes to eat!

Next Friday (4th October) we have our Harvest Festival at St Johns Church, starting at 9:45. We are collecting for Southwark Food Bank throughout the week. We would be enormously grateful if you have any spare tinned food or toiletries to donate. Your child can bring in donations throughout the week- each class will have a donation box for them to add to.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Upcoming Diary Dates

Reception

The children in Reception have had a great week, we have loved looking at Google Earth helping us to understand our local area and talk about how we get to school. They have drawn some amazing maps too. We now know 8 phonemes and we are loving using them to write! Wow!  Outside we have been building cars, chopping carrots and watching a squirrel come and steal nuts from our Autumn Treasures Tray under our very noses!   We talked about what we could do if we are feeling sad and shared some great ideas of how to help ourselves feel better. Proud of you Reception.

Please can you email us in one baby photo for our RE lesson next week. Thank you.

Year 1

In Year 1, we have been working hard to compare groups of objects and numbers. We showed our numbers on our ‘rek n reks’ to check whether we were right. We then challenged ourselves to compare just the digits! In RE, we looked at the parable of the Sower and the Seed and used this story to start our discussion about what we need to grow, both physically and emotionally. Kahlo and Stowasser class came up with some great ideas from vegetables and exercise to hugs and friends! We were able to retell the story using props.

Year 2

The Year 2’s focused on deciding what they considered acceptable and unacceptable behaviours during their PSHE lessons. This is part of building upon our class charters, and understanding how we work as a community that works for everyone. The children gave such thoughtful responses and could give many examples of how they use our school values in their every day lives. Great team work and discussion, keep it up!

Year 3

Children have delved into the Bible over the past couple of RE sessions. This week, we explored a little more as to what the Bible is and then asked our own questions. Children have been identifying stories from both the Old and the New Testament and sequencing these on a timeline. It would be great to make comparisons to other religions and see how the use of the Bible is similar or different.

Year 4

This week in Year 4, we've been focusing on adding or taking away 1, 10, 100, or 1,000 to and from numbers, using exchange methods. To strengthen our understanding, we practised using counters to exchange values, helping us visualise and manipulate numbers more effectively. See us in action!

Year 5

This week Year 5 have been deepening their understanding of how a whole can be divided into ten tenths. We have counted in tenths using tens frames, hundred squares, number lines and dienes. Next week, we’ll look into how a whole can be split into hundredths as well.

Year 6

This week, Year 6 dove into the exciting world of classification, learning about its importance in the scientific world.  We used a range of classification keys, helping us to better understand relationships and connections.  Then, we put our skills to the test by crafting our own classification keys.  Here are some photos of us hard at work!

News from the Art Studio…

As a start to our exploration of colour and music, the children have created their own portraits inspired by Basquiat. The children explored the colours, textures and symbols used in Basquiat’s work. They selected their own materials and thought about how they could represent themselves ’Basquiat–style’!

Music this week…

Reception children (Stik) have spent a couple of weeks listening to music and thinking about how it makes them feel. They were very engaged and enjoyed listening to Mars from Gustav Holst’s suite, The Planets.

Other music included The Imperial March from The Empire Strikes back which you can listen to below.

Year 4 children were putting their own actions to This Little Light of Mine as part of our work this term on Gospel Music.

Year 6 children have been starting to look at Swing Music as they learn to sing Hey, Mr Miller! They are learning about the different dance styles which were popular in the 1930s and 1940s and were very taken with the following video which shows Cab Calloway and The Nicholas Brothers doing some incredible tap dancing.

Stars of the Week

Stars are celebrated because they have demonstrated the school values, or gone above and beyond.
Well done to all our stars this week …

Have a great weekend. See you next week!
