SJSC children play an active part in our school through taking on many roles.

These roles enable them to influence school life and provide a variety of opportunities to have a positive impact on others - living our school values.

We see our children flourish in these roles as they relish the opportunity to:

Achieve – Children aspire to and strive towards higher goals which they have often developed themselves. They are motivated and enthusiastic. Their understanding of the wider world grows as they put their knowledge and skills into action.

Grow – Children build their character – developing self-esteem, confidence, resilience and a sense of responsibility.

Give – Children understand what it is to be part of a community and have a positive role in this. They develop their understanding of others, and have opportunities to show kindness and empathy.

Children’s Roles

School Council

Members are from across the school, voted for by their peers to represent each class. Year 4 organise the yearly elections as a project from their work on Modern Parliament, linked to the Big Idea of Democracy.

School councillors gather opinions and views from their peers on particular subjects, and then work with members of staff to share these and influence changes in school life.

Recent projects have included working with the school caterers to develop the lunch menu, raising money for Red Nose Day, and adding to the play options at breaktimes.

Roles

Well-being Leads

Peer input using the knowledge, skills and experience of children, in a planned and structured way, to offer support, understanding and comradery to other children with whom they have something in common

Eco Team

The Eco team are a group of children from across the school who work to make sustainable changes and positive ecological impact in school.

Their work includes:

  • introducing changes to the school environment, for example, introducing wildlife habitats, build bird houses, adding water buts and planting pollinator friendly flowers.

  • planning events, for example, the annual whole school Eco March, or raising money and awareness for World Ocean’s Day.

  • introduce new practices in school to make it more environmentally friendly, for example a better recycling system

  • and they share their knowledge and expertise with the rest of the school - often running assemblies.

They have achieved the Green Flag Award, and came runners up in the Primary Awards for Green Education in Schools for a project in the Peace Garden.

Reading Ambassadors

Reading Room Team

  • Organise and keep the Reading Room tidy

  • Work with the English lead to create events and activities to engage the school in reading

  • Support the English lead to build the bank of texts offered

Reading Buddies

Children from around the school read with another child in a different year group. They share the enjoyment of reading and offer peer support and practice.

Sports Leaders

Encourage children to be active at playtimes and enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of sport. They set up and run sports games, ensure sports equipment is available, share knowledge in assemblies, and help to run school events like Sports Day.

School Gardeners

The whole school is involved, taking responsibility for the gardening both inside and outside.

We work to create a greener environment which is more environmentally friendly, is a place where we can demonstrate our knowledge learned from Science, grow food we can use in cooking, and has a positive impact on well-being.

We grow fruit and veg, wildlife habitats and calm areas outside. Inside we are developing our Garden Oasis, we ‘green up’ our classrooms, and grow herbs for the dining room.

We learn how to sustainably look after plants, grow from seed, propagate, and importantly everybody contributes to our green environment.

Courageous Advocates

All children join in and lead various events in order to to implement change and make a real difference to the world around them.

Children carry out fundraising events throughout the year.

We have links with the local church groups, local care homes and charities.

There are opportunities to speak up, raise awareness, and take action on issues of social justice - one of our Big Ideas.
