Summer term Issue 38: 12th July 2024

Dear families

The penultimate week has been such a busy one! At the start of the week, we had our transition sessions, where children moved to their new classes, met their new teachers, and started to get excited about the coming year. On Wednesday, our reception children enjoyed their sports day – a great time was had by all, and I am always so impressed by the enthusiasm of the parents in the running race! Our year 5 children performed wonderfully at their Samba concert on the green on Thursday. They have worked incredibly hard this term and it paid off. And finally, today we had fun at Sports Day –thank you to Mr Evans for organising such a wonderful event. Thank you to the parents who help to transport equipment and set up – your support is very much appreciated. Thank you to all those that came to cheer on and create a great atmosphere. Well done to the children who did a brilliant job at showcasing sporting talents, resilience, and being wonderful sports people.

Enjoy the weekend

Upcoming Diary Dates

Reception

What a wonderful week it has been- the highlight being our Sports Day, Thank you to all those who were able to come to support us and cheer on the children, especially on the walk back to school; they loved their guard of honour!

This week we have been looking at similarities and differences between home and school now and in the past. It has generated some fascinating discussions and drawings.

The children visited their new classrooms and met their new teachers. It is so exciting to see how the children have flourished this year and are getting ready for year 1.

Next week we are looking at inventions and would love you to send in things for us to disassemble (please see your emails for more information.)

Year 1

What a week! Year 1 have been so busy, starting the week with our trip to The Horniman where we got to explore and touch some real animals and identify their habitats. Highlights were the shark jaw, the soft badger and the spiky puffer fish! We then also met our new teachers on Tuesday and had the opportunity to explore out new classrooms. We have spoken a lot this week about change and how even good change can feel scary. We discussed ways we could manage any anxiety, such as taking deep breaths, having a drink and a snack or asking a loved one for a hug. We are looking forward to our last week together in Year 1!

Year 2

This week in Year 2, we have been writing the recount of our fabulous trip to Botany Bay. We’ve used all the language devices we have learnt in Year 2 to describe how we eagerly dived into the icy, rolling waves and scared off the pesky seagulls with unusual googly eyes. Go away naughty seagulls! The children have really put their all into this piece of writing and it is some of our best writing yet!

Year 3

Last week, the year 3 had an amazing experience in The Natural History Museum where we revised and expanded our knowledge on earthquakes and Volcanoes. It was pretty cool  to see all of the fossils and rocks as well as the T-rex too! Yes, we managed to fit everything in! Thank you to all of the staff and parents who helped make the trip so successful.

Year 4

This week in Year 4, we explored the concept of symmetry in maths. A line of symmetry is also referred to as the mirror line. Practical application has been key in our learning journey. To deepen our knowledge, we combined congruent shapes, arranging them to create symmetrical figures. We also got the opportunity to meet our new teacher for next year and spent time in our Year 5 classroom. We are looking forward to our last week together in Year 4!

Year 5

On Monday, our Year 5 students went to Beckenham Place Park. The children studied the features of a river and the effects of river systems on the environment. Throughout the day, students engaged in observing, sketching, and describing the river, focusing on how its course changes within the park. This trip was a valuable learning experience, enhancing our understanding of natural water systems.

Year 6

Yesterday, the Year 6 children enjoyed a fantastic trip to the beach to celebrate the end of their time at SJSC. They had so much fun playing games, building structures in the sand and splashing in the sea. We were so lucky with the weather making the trip a perfect celebration of the children’s hard work and achievements throughout the year. What a great lasting memory we can all share!

Music this week…

Last week, Pop Choir went to visit Little Jungle Nursery school where we performed some of our songs to the nursery children. The children from SJSC were fantastic and enjoyed teaching some of their warmup songs to their receptive audience.

This week, Year 5 put on a fantastic Samba performance for the whole school on Goose Green. The sun shone for us and the children were brilliant; everyone was focused and it was wonderful to see both Walker and Lichtenstein work together musically.

In music lessons, Year 5 were using ribbons and body movements to show the contrast between the staccato and legato sections of Epoca by The Gotan Project.

Please see details below of a musical Summer School being run by Kinetica Bloco.
