Summer term Issue 37: 05th July 2024
Dear parents
Another wonderful week at SJSC. A highlight for me was having a sneak peak at the y6 rehearsals for their end of year production. Oscar winning performances here we come!
Rather than winding down, the last 2 weeks are full with:
more engaging learning, transition sessions (please see the separate transition email sent out today), Sports days, and we would love for you to join us Goose Green on Thursday at 10am to see our year 5 Samba performance (fingers crossed for sunshine!)
In the meantime have a great weekend

Upcoming Diary Dates
Reception
This week in Reception we have all been super busy saving the day! The children have been creating their own comic books, having first learned to re-tell the story of “Eliot Jones, Midnight Superhero!”. We drew a story map, to help us remember the order of the story, and then invented actions to help us remember what to say. Ask your child to tell you the story, it starts off “By day, Elliot is quiet….”.
In maths, we have been thinking about ‘more or less’. We have been comparing groups, checking our understanding and explaining our reasoning.
In PSHE, we have been getting excited about next year and talking about our feelings when transitions or changes take place.
Next week, we will be looking at objects from the past and comparing them to the present. We will also be finding out about inventors and will be creating our own inventions.
Year 1
This week, Year 1 have been sorting animals into herbivores, carnivores and omnivores in preparation for our animal workshop next week at The Horniman. We’ve also been shopkeepers in Maths – buying items with 1ps, 2ps, 10ps and 5ps and working out different combinations of coins when paying for them.
Year 2
On Thursday children in Year 2 had a wonderful day exploring Botany Bay. During our trip, we were blessed with wonderful weather, enabling us to really soak up the beach vibes. Swimming in the sea, building sandcastles, having a water fight and flying kites were just some of the activities of the day. A day of full smiles and happy memories being made. A huge thanks to all year 2 parents who got their children to school earlier than usual and to those parent volunteers who kindly supported the children on the day.
Year 3
Gormley class looked at how magnets are used in the real world and then designed and made their own objects using magnets. What a bunch of
innovators we have! The class votes made Posey and Woody the winners of the best inventions but it was very close with all of the magnificent ideas.
Year 4
This week, year 4 delved into an exciting exploration of teeth in science. We began by discussing the various types of teeth and the quantity of each type in our mouths. Following this, we explored the best practises for maintaining healthy teeth. Finally, we took a closer look at our own teeth, examining their shapes and understanding their importance. Witness our learning journey in action!
Year 5
In geography, we have been learning about the features of rivers. We worked in groups to organise pictures showing the upper, middle and lower course of a river then used what we had discovered to label using key vocabulary such as source, tributary, meander, estuary, mouth etc.
Year 6
Year 6 have been enjoying rehearsing on our stage this week. We were lucky to have a visit from the Stagecoach team to help us perfect our acting and performance skills. We are so excited to show you our amazing performance!
Music this week…
This week in the music room, children have been watching clips from last weekend’s Glastonbury Festival. They were amazed by the size of the event and also commented on how “live” music sounds so different to recorded versions.
Year 1 were starting to look at musical notation and using coloured sticks, were making rhythmic patterns to represent crotchets and quavers using Ta and Ti Ti as the accompanying sounds.
Year 2 were layering sounds using unpitched percussion instruments. This was to create the effect of a chugging train. Each instrument group had a different rhythm to play.
It was Year 4’s turn to learn and play King / Queen of the mountain using their knowledge of notation.
Well done to Elizabeth in Year 5 for such a wonderful piano performance in assembly!
News from the Art Studio…
This week in the Art studio, year 3 have started to turn their 2d drawings of birds and feathers into 3d models. Using wire to make the feet for their birds was tricky, but it was lovely to see them all working together to help each other. Each of the birds has a personality of their own. Over the next two weeks, we’ll be adorning the birds with textured feather drawings.
Sports Update
On Wednesday, our year 6 netball team represented SJSC in a mini netball tournament with other local school and teams.
We are so proud of their commitment to the game. The suporters even commented on how much progress they have made and I am pleased to announce that they WON!! It was a close call at the end but they managed to score the winning goal against Heber. Not only did we win but Emmeline was celebrated as the player of the tournament!
Not all of our team could attend due to restricted numbers, and we are grateful for their support and to know that they were very there with us in spirit.
School council update
School Council had a brilliant end-of-year party to celebrate their hard work and achievements. We are really proud of the way the members of the Council have taken their roles seriously – representing the pupil voice in school and making positive changes to our community. Well done everyone!
Stars of the Week
Stars are celebrated because they have demonstrated the school values, or gone above and beyond.
Well done to all our stars this week …
Have a great week See you next week!
