St John's and St Clement's Primary School
Special needs vary from considerable disabilities like hearing impairment or autism to temporary needs related to bereavement, temporary physical disabilities (eg broken arm). Mrs Joy Haskell-Cooper is our Special Needs Coodinator and is in school 2 days a week (usually Monday and Tuesday).
Children with Special Needs may have a range of support in school which can take place inside or outside of the classroom. This work is carefully planned with targets to develop specific skills. This plan is called the Individual Education Plan (IEP). The support can be working in a small group with an experienced and trained Special Support Assistant (SSA) or teacher. Some children have individual support depending on their needs. Often the targets are developed with advice from outside agencies such as the Speech and Language Therapist, the Educational Psychologist, or other clinics. Pupil support can be as intensive as one child to one adult on a daily basis or a three week course during assembly time to develop spelling skills.
We also have a teacher of the deaf, Ms. Mary Johnson, and Mrs Caroline Jones (a specialist hearing impaired assistant) in school to support our hearing impaired pupils. The Hearing Impaired room and the SEN office are on the top floor. Veronica Harewood and Janet Campbell work with targeted children to raise Ethnic Minority Achievement (EMA).
